Useful size and shape

The forearm's long surface gives vertical compositions room to breathe. Whatever size is chosen from the canonical recommendations above, keep dense detail away from the narrowing wrist and the elbow transition, and scale internal detail to the actual usable length of the design.

Style geometry

Long illustrative, blackwork, floral and script compositions can follow the forearm vertically. Wider elements usually read better when they use the side planes intentionally instead of forcing a broad horizontal composition onto the narrowing wrist end.

Transitions and edges

Keep the main focal detail clear of the wrist joint and elbow transition. If a future sleeve is likely, leave usable connection space at one or both ends so secondary shapes, background or flow elements can bridge into the next area without crowding the focal subject.

Rotation

Check the design with the arm hanging naturally as well as with the palm turned. A composition meant to read to other people is usually oriented upright in the relaxed arm position; wrapping or rotating it further should serve the composition rather than compensate for one viewing angle.
